Visit to the beautiful National Botanical Garden of Mauritius

Mauritius National Botanical Garden is home to an incredible variety of tropical plants, many of them indigenous.

The Botanic Garden, formally known as Sir Seewoosagur Botanic Garden, is one of the most visited attractions in Mauritius. The garden is located in the proximity of Port-Louis in the district of Pamplemousse.

The botanical garden was initially opened as a private garden by the French governor of Mauritius nearly 300 years ago, later to become the national botanical garden of Mauritius.

The botanical garden stretches over endless acres of land and it may take you more than a week to cover the whole garden. It is populated with more than 650 varieties of plants among which are the famous Baobabs, the Palmier Bouteille, the ineluctable Giant Water Lilies, dozens of medicinal plants, a large spice garden and many more.

One of the main attractions of the botanical garden is the 85 different varieties of palm trees brought from different corners of the world. Other indigenous species of plants are also exhibited here.

Guides are available at the entrance of the garden, offering a full tour for as little as 1 euro/hour per person (payment for the guides is done at the entrance of the botanical garden). We highly recommend using the guides’ services.

Visit to the Sugar Museum and Factory

Once lusted after as much as gold, sugar has enjoyed an extraordinary existence, leaving a profound impression on the history and identity of Mauritius.

Rising above the sea of green sugar cane fields, like a great ship at anchor, the old Beau Plan sugar mill with its long history is a true history-maker and teller.

By following the trail of the Sugar Adventure with over 250 years of history, you can trace the history of the whole country.

The tour of the old sugar mill, which has been transformed into a modern museum, lasts about 1:30 hours, at the end of tour, delightful sugar and rum tastings await the visitor.

The adventure starts behind the facade of the factory building, with tales woven around the life story of sugar, which for long period of time has been the main product of Mauritius.

You will then visit the enormous factory, its decade-old machines decked with a thousand lights. A sugarcane hedge leads the way to the fully restored and converted sugar factory where films evoking the early years of Mauritius appear on giant screens.

The factory was used until the 1970s to transport sacks of sugar in the port. Today you can see how the docks used to be in those times and discover their importance to Mauritius.

The Sugar Adventure is suitable for all ages and it has been conceived to be of interest for both international visitors, as well as for the locals.

For children

In order for the children to understand the story of the sugar , The Sugar Adventure has chosen two “mascots” to tell children of the extraordinary story of sugar: two animals typical of the island, the mynah bird (martin) and the mongoose. These two mascots will guide the children all along the visit, offering entertaining questions and answers to be found under envelopes placed in various places in the museum and in the factory.

The various species of marine life are grouped in well-lit tanks and pools which makes it possible to observe, at eye-level, a truly fantastic and enchanting sight of the marine ecosystem of the island.

You will also have the possibility of attending the feeding sessions, including Giant Morays, sharks and sea turtles, within arm’s reach, being fed by hand, along with a question & answer session with an expert aquarist who will guide you through the richness of our largely diverse coral reef.

The aquarium is a great place for kids to visit and learn about the lovely aquatic creatures and tropical fish that reside in our lagoon.

About the Red Church at Cap Malheureux

One of the most renowned churches in Mauritius is the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel, a Roman Catholic Church famous for its vivid red roof against the bright turquoise sea and azure sky.

Located ten minutes from Grand Bay is the small fishing village of Cap Malheureux. It translates to “Unfortunate/Unhappy Cape”, due to the numerous ships, which floundered there in the past.

The Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church is famous for its lovely red roof, which attracts many curious passers-by and offers a picturesque background for worthy snapshots. This simple chapel was founded in 1938 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is situated ideally at the very northern point of Mauritius, offering breathtaking views of the five northern islets, including Coin de Mire (Gunner’s Quoin).

This Roman Catholic Church draws in a lot of visitors as well as worshippers. On Sunday mornings, many tourists can be found joining the mass. The church, as well as the beach behind the church is a popular spot for newlyweds to have their pictures taken- so it is not uncommon to run into couples here. The beach behind allows you to soak up the sun and enjoy the view, while the kids can play in the white sand and discover aquatic life in the rock pools. Fishermen are also frequently docking, with a fresh catch.

Additional Information about the Mauritius Aquarium

The Mauritius Aquarium offers a unique experience through five well laid out principal buildings surrounded by a tropical garden, that allow you to discover the rich aquatic life which inhabits the coastal waters of Mauritius. The various species of marine life are grouped in well-lit tanks and pools which makes it possible to observe, at eye-level, the endless ballet enacted by our island surrounding ecosystem.

You will get to see the Crown squirrelfish and the Devil Firefish as well as a number of sharks. Also, get ready to see neon bright, glowing yellows, fluorescent greens, purples and other amazing colors you probably didn’t believe could be found in any marine wildlife.

The complex also includes the refreshing Coral Café and a well-appointed Gift Shop, to help make your visit to the Mauritius Aquarium, a pleasant experience.

Trou aux Biches is one of the most beautiful beaches in the north of the island, located between Mont Choisy and Pointe aux Piment this beautiful beach is famous among photographers for its setting and postcard sceneries. Trou aux Biches was elected several times as one of the most beautiful beaches in the African continent and often cited as one of the finest beaches in the world. Although Trou aux Biches is very popular among the locals, the beach is calm and not crowded during the week.

Trou aux Biches with its 3 kilometers of beach lined with coconut trees, white sand beach surrounded by crystal clear turquoise water is a haven for swimming. Far from major tourist circuits, ideal for a day at the beach to perfect your tan, Trou aux Biches is the perfect place for sea lovers. You’ll find a host of water sports, restaurants and merchants of ice cream near the beach if you want something refreshing during the heat waves.

Recent work undertaken at the entrance to the beach to build a restaurant had a negative effect on this paradise that was partially disfigured, but the beach is gradually returning to its charm and authenticity. The jet ski was also introduced there sparking controversy that questions the safety of swimmers, but operators of this new attraction want to be reassuring by setting safety standards to ensure the success of this activity popular with holidaymakers

On arrival on the beach you will find hundreds of sunbeds that can be irritating because they limited the movement of bathers and access to the beach, nevertheless you can hire a sunbed if you wish for an hour or two or choose to lay down directly on the white beach. Trou aux Biches remains a friendly little beach that quickly attract crowds on holidays and weekends.

The nudist is prohibited, but topless sunbathing is accepted. The best time to visit the beach of Trou aux Biches is early in the morning from 8:00 to 12:00 or in the afternoon from 15:00 to 17:00.
